In the Same (Sunken) Boat with the Steelers
The 2008 season was great for both of my football passions — the Steelers won the Super Bowl, and my fantasy team won the Fantasy Bowl. And as defending champs, both passions shared the same fate for the 2009 season which ended Sunday night — missed the playoffs.
My fantasy team was out after week 14, [...]
Thanks, Askimet
I just caught this alert on my dashboard in leatheregg.com’s WordPress dashboard — nearly 50,000 spam comments caught by Askimet. Considering there are days when I still get 4 or 5 comments going into moderation that Askimet doesn’t catch, I’m pretty happy that Askimet exists. That’s a lot of potential spam to manually trash.
an icon for the Pittsburgh Pirates
I love the Pittsburgh Pirates, and I had fun following their wild opening night win in Atlanta. But despite how crazy a game this year’s Pirate opener was, it still doesn’t top the wildest baseball game I’ve attended — April 21, 1991 Pirates vs. Cubs in Pittsburgh, a game Andy Van Slyke predicted he would [...]
no fiesta for the Patriots
The Super Bowl seemed as though it was going to unfold similar to the 1986 Fiesta Bowl for the college football national championship. In that game, Penn State took a 14-10 lead late in the game. The Miami Hurricanes were driving down the field, late in the 4th quarter, and Miami QB Vinny Testaverde threw [...]
invasion of the gloggers

dog eat dog
Life isn’t looking too good for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick these days. Vick, who has repeatedly professed his innocence on federal dogfighting charges, is now the last man standing of the four men indicted last month — the other three have agreed to plea bargains.
Of course, Vick was professing his innocence before his co-defendants [...]
it can't get much worse
You know you’ve pretty much hit rock bottom when you’re the butt of the joke at ESPN’s Page 2, where the banner quote the past couple of days has been “Where we’re disappointed the Pirates didn’t trade with us.” Yes, the Pittsburgh Pirates are the butt of many a joke, 14+ years and counting, and [...]
a member of the fam-a-lee dies
Considering the abysmal state of the Pittsburgh Pirates for the past decade and a half, younger fans might not be terribly familiar with members of the Pirates back when they were winning on a consistent basis. The 1979 team was the last to win a World Series title. This was the “We Are Family” team [...]
